If you have been in business for a while, you might still call it your "Google My Business" page. Google renamed it Google Business Profile a few years ago, but it is the same thing: the listing that shows up with your name, hours, phone number, reviews, and photos when someone searches for you or for what you do. For most local businesses, it is the most important thing on the internet that they are not paying attention to.

Here is why it matters so much, what an optimized profile actually looks like, and exactly how we handle it for businesses around Central Florida.

Your Profile Is Often Your First Impression

When someone searches "AC repair near me" or "video production Plant City," the first thing they usually see is not a list of websites. It is a map with a handful of businesses pinned on it, each showing a star rating, a few photos, and a button to call or get directions. That map section sits above the regular search results, and it is where a lot of local customers make their decision.

Plenty of those customers never visit a website at all. They look at the reviews, glance at the photos, check that you are open, and tap the call button. If your profile is half-finished, has old hours, or shows a blurry logo and nothing else, you can lose that customer to the business pinned next to you without ever knowing they were looking.

Why Google Business Profile Matters for Local Search

Google decides which businesses to show in that map section based on a few broad things: how relevant your business is to the search, how close you are to the person searching, and how established and trusted your business looks online. You cannot move your building closer to every customer, but relevance and trust are things your profile has a lot of influence over.

A profile with the right categories, a complete list of services, accurate hours, real photos, and a steady stream of reviews gives Google clear reasons to show it. A profile with the wrong primary category or missing information makes Google guess, and Google does not tend to guess in your favor.

It Feeds More Than Just Google Maps

The information on your profile does not stay in one place. It shows up in Google Maps, in regular search results when someone searches your business name, and increasingly in AI-generated answers, like Google's AI Overviews, that pull together local recommendations. When those tools describe your business, your hours, or what you offer, a lot of that comes from your profile and from how consistent it is with your website and other listings around the web.

That makes accuracy more important than ever. Outdated hours or an old phone number do not just confuse one customer. They can get repeated anywhere your business gets mentioned.

It Is Free, Which Is Why So Many Businesses Ignore It

Google Business Profile does not cost anything to claim or manage. That is great news, but it also means it is easy to set up once and forget. A lot of the profiles we look at were created years ago, sometimes by a previous owner or a past employee, and nobody has touched them since. Some were never claimed at all, which means Google built them automatically from whatever information it could find.

The businesses that stand out in local search are usually not the ones with the biggest marketing budgets. They are the ones that treat their profile like a storefront and keep it current.

How We Optimize a Google Business Profile

Here is what the process looks like when we take on a new client's profile. Every business is a little different, but these are the steps we work through every time.

1. Look at Where It Stands Today

Before we change anything, we review the current listing. Is it claimed and verified? Who has access to it? Are the categories, hours, and service areas correct? Are there duplicate listings floating around with an old address or phone number? We also look at the businesses showing up ahead of you for your most important searches, so we know what you are up against.

2. Claim and Verify the Listing

If the profile has not been claimed, or if access is stuck with someone who no longer works with you, we get it back under your control first. You own your profile. We get added as managers so we can do the work, but the listing always stays in your name.

3. Choose the Right Categories

Your primary category is one of the strongest signals on the entire profile, and it is one of the most common things we find set up wrong. We pick the primary category that best matches what you most want to be found for, then add secondary categories for the other services you offer. Getting this right can change which searches you show up for.

4. Fill Out Everything Google Gives You

We write a clear business description that explains what you do and where you do it, in plain language a customer would actually read. We list out your services, set accurate hours (including holiday hours), define your service area if you travel to customers, and add the attributes that apply to you, like accessibility, payment options, or whether you are veteran-owned or family-owned. The more complete the profile, the less Google has to guess.

5. Add Real Photos and Video

This is where being a media company helps. Most profiles we see have a logo and maybe a few phone photos. We shoot real, professional photos and short video of your team, your location, and your work, and add them to your profile. People want to see who they are about to hire or where they are about to walk in, and good photos make your profile look like a business that is active and takes itself seriously.

6. Clean Up Your Information Across the Web

Your business name, address, and phone number should match everywhere they appear: your website, your Google profile, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, and the many directories that list local businesses. When those details conflict, it chips away at the trust Google has in your listing. We find and fix inconsistencies and get rid of duplicate listings so everything points to one accurate version of your business.

7. Connect It to Your Website

Your profile and your website should back each other up. We make sure your website clearly lists the same services and service areas as your profile, that your contact information matches exactly, and that the page your profile links to is a good landing spot for someone who just found you on Google.

Optimization Is the Start, Not the Finish

Getting a profile fully built out is a one-time project. Keeping it working is ongoing. Google pays attention to profiles that stay active, and customers notice too. That is why most of our clients move from the initial optimization into ongoing Google Business Profile management, which covers the following.

  • Regular posts about offers, news, seasonal updates, and recent jobs
  • Fresh photos and video as your business changes
  • Prompt, professional replies to every review, good or bad, and we check with you on anything sensitive before it goes out
  • A simple, repeatable way to ask happy customers for reviews
  • Watching for unwanted edits, since anyone can suggest changes to your listing and Google sometimes accepts them
  • Updating hours and services whenever something changes

Why Reviews Deserve Extra Attention

Reviews do double duty. They are one of the trust signals Google looks at, and they are often the deciding factor for a customer comparing three businesses side by side. A business with a handful of reviews from years ago looks very different from one with a steady flow of recent ones, even if the work is equally good.

How you respond matters too. A thoughtful reply to a negative review often does more to build trust than the review did to hurt it, because future customers can see how you handle problems. We help clients build the habit of asking for reviews and make sure every review gets a real response.

What We Will Not Do

There are shortcuts out there, like stuffing keywords into your business name, setting up listings at addresses you do not actually operate from, or buying reviews. They can work briefly, and they can also get a profile suspended. We do not use any of them. We would rather build a profile that earns its spot and keeps it.

We also will not promise you the number one spot. Nobody can honestly guarantee that, because things like where the searcher is standing are outside anyone's control. What we can do is make sure your profile is giving you every advantage it can.

What This Looks Like With Us

For most of our clients, their Google Business Profile is one part of a bigger picture that also includes their website, local SEO, and the photo and video content we shoot for them. Each piece supports the others. A strong profile sends people to a strong website, and the content we create keeps both of them looking current.

Whether your profile needs a full rebuild or just some cleanup, we start by taking an honest look at where it stands and telling you what we would change and why.

Quick Recap

  • Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is often the first thing a local customer sees, and many of them call straight from it.
  • Complete, accurate profiles with real photos and steady reviews give Google clear reasons to show your business.
  • We optimize by reviewing the listing, claiming it, fixing categories, filling out every section, adding professional photos and video, cleaning up your information across the web, and connecting it to your website.
  • After that, ongoing management keeps the profile active with posts, review responses, and regular updates.
